How to Read Your Bible and Grow in Your Faith

God has called us to not be conformed to the patterns of the world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, that we might prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God (Rom 12:1, 2).

The place where that transformation really takes place is in a daily, consistent habit of reading God's word (the Bible), journaling what he shows you, and spending time with him in prayer.

We encourage you to follow a simple, yet powerful pattern of devotional study as the bedrock of growth in your relationship with Jesus Christ, following the acronym S.O.A.P.  In an hour you can do 20 minutes of reading, 20 minutes of journaling, and 20 minutes of prayer.  We call it 20/20 devotions.  Here's how it works:

S

For Scripture

Open your Bible to the day's scripture reading (which you can find here), ask God to reveal himself to you as you read, and watch for the verse or passage that really speaks to you.

O

For Observation

What is God showing you from this passage? Write down your observations in your journal, paying attention to what God reveals to you from the scripture. The journal is an important step in the process! You'll get a lot more out of your reading if you will journal on it.

A

For Application

Ask God to show you what this passage means to your personal life right now. Watch for promises to claim, warnings to heed, and areas of correction the Holy Spirit reveals to you.

P

For Prayer

Write a prayer in your journal that embodies your response to what God has shown you today. Ask him to transform your life as his Word works within you.

See Pastor Charlie's 2020 Blog for an example of what a daily journal entry looks like.
